Photo Paintings

What a dilemma!!  What wall décor should you hang in your home?  What is the best interior design for your home?  Should you hang only oil paintings, or silk screens?  Contemporary or classic?  What about a combination … abstract and realism?

And, lest we forget all mediums, don’t forget Photo Paintings!!

What?  Did I hear a grumble?  Did I hear a murmur of skepticism?  Ah … yes, I did!  It was you in the row near the back.  Why do all the doubters sit in the shadows and so far away?

Yes, Tom, Dick, Harry … or Susie … Photo Paintings!!!

Not all photographs that hang on the wall in your home décor have to be portraits.  Especially, portraits from those “marts!!”  Many of the images in the Galleries of The Hanging Image are stylized treatments to everyday subjects … or of not so everyday subjects.  The main criteria of these ideas are to create from cameras and from artistic photographers’ creative eyes!

Some of my favorite images that I’ve taken are views without people in them.  And, yes … my boyfriend gets a bit miffed that I don’t take more photos with him in them.

In essence, photography is painting with light.  Cameras are the brushes which house the mediums (film or digital cards).  That is why I’ll mostly refer to Photo Paintings, and not only to photos, as a catch all.

Let’s consider something … you have just purchased a wooden bowl with some very realistic looking fruit.  Let’s continue the scenario with the idea that you bought this at a Flea Market (my favorite place to spend time).  You decided to take the bowl and the fruit home to display in that silly part of your Country Kitchen where nothing looked right.  You’ve created a 3-dimensional still-life!  Also, you picked up an antique ice cream chair and a small round table to hold the bowl of fruit.

However, once you’ve placed the chair and table with the bowl of fruit where you intended them, something still didn’t look right.  Ah … you determined that the wall behind the chair looked bare.  That expanse of wall was taking your eye away from the nice arrangement.  The bare wall was not enhancing the furniture design.  Your eye was
not flowing from the furniture arrangement to other areas of the kitchen.  What to do?

By browsing the Galleries, you can find all kinds of wall designs for your decorating!  It could be one framed large print (10x13), a bit smaller framed print (8x12), or much smaller (4 – 3 1/2x5 or 4x6) prints grouped in a square, perhaps.  Your ideas decide what you do!  Go with whatever grabs ya!

You don’t want to over-do the decorating.  It is possible to keep your decorating to a minimal.  Keep the framing simply tasteful.  That is the answer.

Remember … the Photo Paintings do not have to be of fruit.  The subject can be something that picks up colors of the fruit, or a continuing color theme through your kitchen.

With my overactive imagination, I saw some cactus views by one of the Artists, which I envisioned would look really cool in our scenario.  Another Artist is displaying very colorful Photo Paintings of flowers.  Check out the Galleries … you will be impressed … in my humble opinion.  Remember to make it a fun endeavor!  Choosing art should not be a chore.

Look in all the Galleries for some Photo Paintings to enhance your “bowl of fruit!!”  And, this time, I am using the ‘bowl of fruit’ as a metaphor.  Whatever you have in the way of furnishings placed on the floor can be enhanced/complimented by what you select to hang on the wall behind that arrangement.  The eye needs encouraging to flow from one part of the room to other parts of the room to all works of art … be it in your kitchen, living room or office.

The entire idea with decorating, to me, is how one item compliments other items.  This also includes colors, textures, dimensions and placements.  I mean --- if you are a ‘heavy metal rocker’ and you do not want anything to compliment, forget this suggestion.  If you are into thoughtful decorating, then please … give my suggestions a try.

Take care, readers.  I hope to create a new article on print usage for Photo Paintings.  Size does count.
